Well, I figure it is time to get my nerd on with the older two girls. We have a dire need of something that will give us some family time without me wanting to eat my young by the end of things, so I'm thinking a nice RPG is the way to go.
And that's where I need the nerds to weigh in. 'Cause I've never played a tabletop game.
I'm torn between looking for some old school D&D stuff (pref. used, so I don't have to lay out an arm & a leg & a basilisk for it) so as to help the girls hone their math skills--especially my first grader who likes to do her sister's third grade math homework--or a simpler D20 game for simplicity's sake. I'm leaning toward D&D because I know where to find modules online for nada. But I can probably adapt them for a D20 system without too much difficulty if I can't find modules for whatever I wind up with, and I think even the 5-year-old would be able to get in on that.
So...Suggestions/Input? (Other than "Sabra, you are far too fucking high strung for this to possibly be a good idea," 'cause...yeah. But I'm doing it anyway.)
And where the hell do I find gaming stuff locally? It's been probably 15 or 20 years since I was even near a D&D game in this city. If I was in Norfolk, I'd know just where to go...

You're such a cool mom. My parents wouldn't let me have have one until I was old enough to join the military.
I would suggest you start off with something easier to introduce concepts and lower level math.
Something like Risk if you aren't already playing or Stratego.
The kids will quickly tire of them - they are kinda boring but that is okay, it shows them they can figure things. Introduces concepts like mass attacks, battle math (my 5 armies can't beat her 15 armies).
Glad to know that some families are willing to sit around the table and play games. We aren't the only ones left out there.

In addition to standard D&D fare, there are zillions of other games that older kiddos will love. I can list far too many, but my friends and I get together 2 or 3 weekends a month to play all kinds of different stuff. Have He shoot me an email!

Let me put a plug in here for Steve Jackson's GURPS: Generic Universal Role Play System. You can run literally ANY genre using these basic rules.

If you are mildly unscrupulous, I've heard it said that whole collections of old rpgs are available on torrent sites. Somehow, I'm not sure how, the entire original Traveller game and supplements ended up on my hard drive.
