There are some stupid people in this world

Gun found in preschooler's backpack.

The money quote:

"The mother was contacted and told detectives she didn't know the gun was in her vehicle."

Say what, now?

I'm really not sure which option is worse:

1) The woman is lying to cover for someone.  (Herself, her boyfriend...)
2) The woman legitimately did not know that there was a gun in her car.

How the hell can you not know there's a gun in your floorboard?  I mean, damn, I know we need to clean out the truck bad, but it's not like we wouldn't notice a freaking pistol.

And how the hell do you not notice your kid picking up a gun and putting it in his backpack?

How in the world do you neglect teaching your kids not to handle firearms at that age?

We teach 5 year olds not to touch hot stoves, sharp knives, chemicals.

People would consider the parent(s) negligent if they didn't teach kids those things yet fewer people teach their kids the proper thing to do when they find or see a firearm.

That is neglect!!

Sounds damn suspicious to me. Of course she knew it was there. I have yet to see a gun sprout legs and climb into a vehicle.

As usual, you're right. I have never understood why even the most adamantly anti-gun moms don't teach their children how to be safe around them. It's like they think if they acknowledge guns' existence, that's tantamount to having an "arsenal" of their own.
