'Tis the season to be a dumbass

So I was driving home from dropping the kids off at school this morning, & listening to WOAI's Charlie Parker and they started talking about the Arizona gun club that was offering its members the opportunity to pose for pictures with a Barrett machine gun, Santa, & their choice of other weapons. It was all well and good until Charlie Parker introduced his guest...a licensed clinical social worker with a psych degree.

Now, I suppose it's possible that they proceeded to discuss how it's perfectly normal for enthusiasts of any given hobby to want to exhibit that in their Christmas cards, so don't read this as a rip on WOAI's First News (although I'm forced to note that Mr Parker wasn't inclined toward logic on the topic of Campus Carry). But seriously--you had to call in a bottom-of-the-line psychologist to discuss tacky Santa photos? Really?

I told my mother that, the next thing you know, the Corvette Club was gonna offer photos with Santa Claus and a 'Vette, & sure enough, they do.(That photo is from their '09 event.).

See, this is the thing that a lot of people seem to be missing with this "news" story. Shooting is a hobby for most people who own guns. Yeah, there are survivalist hardasses out there, and crazies, but the guys you have to worry about are NOT the ones engaging in such outrageously silly behavior as posing for pictures with Santa with borrowed assault rifles.

I am well aware, mind you, of the fact that at least half the reason these pictures are being done at all is that it's guaranteed to get a rise out of idiots. I propose, in fact, that these pictures be used as an idiot test. It's one question long, and pretty much foolproof--

You see a picture of a family and Santa Claus. All the adults are armed, and a machine gun is in the foreground. Are these people:
A) playing an elaborate practical joke
B) probably rednecks
C) shooting hobbyists
D) in need of psychological evaluation

Answer D? Congratulations, you're a fucking idiot.

But Sabra, why would Santa need a machine gun? Isn't a single Red Rider BB gun enough?
