I'm an English major. You do the math.

I really don't like math.  It's not that I am bad at it (except geometry), it just bores me silly.  Since I quit taking it in high school just as soon as I could, I actually wound up in remedial math when I started at SAC.  Never having used it, I lost it (same thing happened with German & Russian).

All of that said, the number of people who answered this equation with 0 really scares me:
Photobucket

I'm sure this says something profound about politics.

Huh? I hate those FB questions! Is "with 14" part of the question?

Anything multiplied by 0 is 0, surely you know that.

Of course I do. I also know that multiplication is worked before addition & subtraction, so the only thing in that equation that is multiplied by zero is the 1 that is directly in front of it.

... Leaving 16 ones, as I count 'em. My answer would be 16.

what? i don't ever remember learning that. you're supposed to do things in parentheses first, never heard do multiplication first.

Order of operations/PEMDAS goes like this: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.

Leaving 16 ones, as I count 'em.

I did the same thing at first, but there is a single minus sign, making it 14. It's the tenth sign & very easy to miss.

In middle school I was taught the mnemonic "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally."

And, believe it or not, it has proved useful throughout my life.
