Final proof that real chili doesn't have beans

Obama's chili does.

The ingredient list:
1 large onion
1 green bell pepper
Several cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground turkey or beef
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/4 teaspoon ground basil
1 tablespoon chili powder
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Several fresh tomatoes, depending on size (or
1 15-ounce can of diced tomatoes with juice)
1 (15 ounce) can red kidney beans

Actually, the beans don't bother me.  I've said it before, I'm a chili whore (though I haven't made with-beans chili for a while now).  What bothers me is the whole "serve it on rice" part.  I realize that's a Hawaiian thing, but it's still wrong.  Very wrong.

my wife's family eats chili on rice and I agree, it's quite strange.

At least rice is better than spaghetti.

Could be worse: in Ohio, chili is watery and people put a dollop of peanut butter in it.
I'm from Mississippi, where chili is *always* served with cornbread.

I don't care for some of the spices. Turmeric? That's what you use to make curry powder and mustard yellow. And chili powder is nasty.
I prefer mixing my own chili powder, from anchos, guajillos, and chipotles. Some toasted and fresh ground cumin, a bit of unsweetened chocolate, and if you're putting in a can of tomatoes, it ought to be Rotel. He got the garlic and onions right, but that's about it.

BC, I'm in MS and my wife also does the cornbread with chili.

I usually have any chili with rice (sometimes over, sometimes on the side), and definitely with cornbread. I think it's something that came across the Sabine as folks came westward.

+1 on the rice and cornbread. And, I like beans in my chili. The half of my family that even made chili came of a dirt farm in Beckville, TX. Sneeze and stumble to the right, you'd be in Louisiana. Might be the depression era influence, rice and beans are filling.

oh fuck that. Chili is a meal on it's own. Rice? No. Only commies serve it on rice.

Thank you for more evidence that real chili doesn't have beans.

I'll book mark this post for future reference.

And I will admit to having chili over rice occasionally but usually on the 2nd or 3rd day after the spices have really set up.

The only thing I put on rice is kimchi.

Wait, you're supposed to put kimchee on something, not just eat it straight?

I'm confused. Proof that real chili does not have beans is the fact that Obama likes it with beans??

Jokes and political blogs are both things that confuse you, eh?

In S. IN where I was raised it was with beans and elbows. The beans always came from left over white bean soup.
