Some people need to shut up.

Disabled kids are God's punishment.

State Delegate Bob Marshall of Manassas says disabled children are God's punishment to women who have aborted their first pregnancy.

He made that statement Thursday at a press conference to oppose state funding for Planned Parenthood.

"The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children," said Marshall, a Republican.

"In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There's a special punishment Christians would suggest."

I'm sure I don't need to say this man is full of shit, but I'm going to anyway.

Bob Marshall, you are an idiot. You are an embarrassment to me as a Christian, as a pro-lifer, and as a mother. On behalf of all rational people who happen to share a vague connection with you because of ideology, I beg--SHUT UP.

I came across this article on Facebook, linked by the mother of a disabled child (who has not, to my knowledge, ever had an abortion), who commented on it "One of the reasons I'm an Atheist." Ya think? How am I supposed to argue in favor of a loving God, and of His benevolent followers, when people are spewing this vomit?

I think again of my boyfriend, whose cerebral palsy is technically a birth defect (and a slight disability)...he is his mother's first child, and she is as fine a woman and a pro-lifer as anyone could hope to find. To blame Erik's, as he says, affliction on anything his mother did is enough to rocket Marshall to the top of my list of people who really need a kick in the nuts. (I'm relatively certain Peggy's too ladylike to do it; I'm not.)

Why on Earth would anyone spew forth something so vile and easily disproven? Am I to believe Sarah Palin has an abortion in her background, when she refused to kill her disabled son while he was still in the womb? There are a lot of women out there who've never had an abortion or even farted in Planned Parenthood's direction who have disabled children. Further, there are women who've had multiple abortions who don't.

There are a lot of things that cause disabilities. Mitochondrial disease. Oxygen deprivation at birth. An extra chromosome. Sometimes, it really is what the mother does--as well all know excessive alcohol and drug use can lead to birth defects.

But abortion? Seriously? No. It has nothing to do with abortion. There are thousands of legitimate reasons to argue against abortion and Planned Parenthood--not the least of which is the disproportionate toll taken on black people. Speak to the real stuff, and STFU about the rest of it.

Sigh.

There are so many of us who keep smacking down the Ivy League bigots, and then a guy like him comes right out with something that's, well, Redneck, bigoted, and ignorant.

He's hurting the team.

Oh, and he's a [redacted], too.

I'll help with the nut-kicking, if for no other reason than to make sure that fool doesn't continue his genes on this earth. Of my friends who I knew well enough for them to discuss such things, only one had an abortion, her first pregnancy, and she would be a double-aberration to that fool's idea, because her successive two girls are fine and healthy, and she became vehemently pro-life after the abortion.

Makes a person want to slap the shit out of that asshole, doesn't it?

Sabra,

I'll disagree - idjits like this do not need to shut up, they actually need to speak up more.

The more vocal they are, the easier they are to identify and get out of office.

Any body can have an opinion, we may not like it but that is the fact.

Any office holder that has this opinion isn't fit for office.

Having them stay quiet just lets them fly under the radar.

Speak State Delegate Bob Marshall -- show everyone why you aren't fit for office.

Since Borepatch led me to your blog, you may as well read what I left on his blog. It applies to you as well.

I think you are being too harsh on Delegate Bob Marshall. The reason is obvious. You don' live in Virginia. So you are judging the man based upon one statement. That is unfair, and you are old enough to know better. Based upon what I have had time to read of your blog, I suspect you are also wise enough to know better.

Marshall is a solid Conservative. He believes in limited government and is fiscally conservative. Because Marshall also is a Social Conservative, much of Virginia's corporate news media utterly hates his guts. So they constantly use any opportunity to harass him. However, because Marshall speaks thoughtfully and carefully, he rarely gives them any opportunity.

Note that Marshall has been in office since 1991. He represent a district in Northern Virginia, not exactly a red necked backwater. Even though his opponents outspend him every two years, he has won reelection every two years. In fact, in our last Senate election (Federal office), he fell only a few votes short of receiving the Republican Party's nomination.

Is Marshall perfect? No. That honor belongs to God.

Since I rather doubt you would appreciate being judged the same way you judged him, I think it fair to say you owe Marshall an apology."
